In 1896, the economy dominated the election campaign. McKinley faced off against the brilliant orator from Nebraska, William Jennings Bryan. McKinley won the election and would become beneficiary of a favorable swing in the business cycle as the nation was recovering from the great depression of the 1890's. With the economy picking up and the frontier settled, a growing middle class pursued the gentle pleasures of the Victorian life.
